Cedar AWD: Building Your Dream Garage

cedar home garageThe garage is the perfect place to stage life’s adventures. Gearing up for a day on the slopes, preparing for that summer fishing trip, or even just setting out for a quick family picnic. But the fun can be spoiled when the garage is cluttered with disorganized stacks of tools and sports equipment and junk drawers filled with random odds and ends. With a little work and these tips your garage can be your family’s go-to place to prepare for whatever the day may hold.

Draft a Floor Plan

Make your life easier by sketching a floor plan of your garage. Be sure to mark off how much space is needed for your vehicles and take windows, doors, and fixtures into account. You can then begin adding organization systems to each wall. Place things strategically to both maximize space and keep them in convenient and easy-to-access places. For example, hang coats near the door or house entrance, place items like lawn mowers and snow blowers in an out-of-the-way corner, and store seasonal items like holiday decorations in hard to reach places. If desired, leave room for a work bench and/or vertical hanging systems for hanging tools, skis/snowboards, and other bulky items that won’t fit on shelves.

Shelving/Cabinets

Adequate shelving is crucial for staying organized. Open shelving is optimal because you can see where everything is located. Stack bins of less-used items on top shelves, and place more frequently-used items on lower shelves. Install a few cedar (or cedar-lined) cabinets to provide protection for coats and other clothing and items that require moisture control.

Think Outside the Box

Utilize every inch of storage space, including your ceiling. Hang bulky items such as kayaks and bikes from the ceiling, or create an overhead storage system with tracks and suspended plastic bins.

Smaller items such as fish tackle, screws/nuts/bolts, etc. can be stored in glass jars with metal lids, all stored on a magnetic shelf. You can also hang a magnetic strip (similar to the ones you often see in the kitchen for knives) to hang tools, drill bits, nails, screws, etc.).

Add a Touch of Style

Add some style to your garage with a bright paint color or interesting lighting fixtures. Create an eye-catching feature wall made from stained wood paneling and hooks to hang fishing equipment, garden tools, or sports gear.

Adding a cedar wooden garage door is an easy way to add elegance to your garage and improve your home’s curb appeal (and your home’s value). Cedar is optimal because of its natural beauty as well as its ability to withstand deterioration from harsh weather, the sun, mold, and other natural elements.
