OUR MILL FACILITY AND LUMBER PRODUCTION:

At our Boyne Falls sawmill location, the logs are processed into green dimensional lumber. We utilize sawing systems with the capacity to maintain our production levels, and achieve our quality standards for the end product.

We maintain inventory levels to give resonable delivery responses to our customers and guarantee the quality of our products. All of our log home and log siding product inventory is computer controlled with an electric bar code system to insure that a sufficient amount of stock is maintained to meet customer and production needs.

 SAWING PROCESS:

There are two stages of sawing. First there's 'canting' where the log is cut into a square and the first layer of sapwood is removed. Next is 're-sawing'. This process saws the cant into dimensional sizes needed to obtain the appropriate log home and log siding end product and inventory mix.

KILN DRYING LUMBER:

The importance of kiln drying is seen in the finished product! Removing moisture to a point of 'product stabilization' is only accomplished through kiln drying.

The process of kiln drying is an important step in the processing of our log or timber home materials. We insist that our materials are dried to very specific moisture contents. This is why we have installed the same kind of kilns used in the furniture business. This insures that our moulding and planing processes are accurate, thus producing the highest quality end log home product. In addition, kiln drying eliminates the problems associated with "air drying". Since our products are dried under controlled conditions, we are able to reduce the amount of defects that occur during the process. Once the log home and log siding products are dried to specific moisture levels consistent with their end use, we are able to visually inspect the wood and remove any defect that may have occured during this phase. Wood changes in dimention as it dries to its "equilibrium point" and this occurs in our kiln versus on your house. Thus eliminating checking, warping and shrinkage after installation

We have two large kilns. Each will dry approximately 70,000 bd ft of material. The kiln drying process will take 4 days to two weeks depending on the size of the cedar we are drying and how much moisture is contained in the wood when it is loaded into the kiln. It takes time, but it is critical that your wood is properly dried in our kilns and not on your log home.

MILLING OPERATIONS:

Production Line Operations: Town & Country Cedar Homes has combined hand-crafting of unique building elements with 21st century technology to efficiently produce log and timber home building materials. A computerized controller oversees the entire machining phase production line that was designed and installed to ensure error-free home building products at the lowest possible cost. The production line is where all the previous careful efforts of harvesting, sawing and kiln-drying come together. On our production line, the wood is shaped to provide the size and profile of the various log siding and paneling products and hand-hewn to add the final "character" to each piece. Critical to this phase is the ability of our craftsmen to make all of our log home or timber home products to the exact standard required by both the builder and the construction process, yet maintain a natural wooden home look at an affordable cost to our customers. Each kiln dried cedar product also goes thru a defecting step; this step is done by hand to insure each piece of finished log siding, paneling, board & batton, or other products meet our grading standard. Our End Matching process puts the tongue-and-grooves on the ends of each piece. Log siding products are also passed through a peeling line. We have three large custom peeling machines with multiple settings, so no matter what size of log siding we are running we can achieve the best looking log siding products available in the industry as cost efficiently as possible. This is a benefit to both the end user and Town & Country Cedar Products. It increases our capacity and lowers cost. The last step in the production process is a final grading, review and stacking. This completes our log home products' transformation from kiln-dried white cedar cants to a finished log siding or paneling product. Our 100% usable material guarantee means faster installation and greater client satisfaction as the builder have found that end matched log sidings and panelings save them approximately 20% in labor and insures a superior finished product.

GREEN PRODUCTION:

Ecologically friendly processing means nothing is wasted. The sawdust and shavings from our log siding production line is blown into a silo and collected to be used for horse and dog bedding. Horse farms and kennels like our white cedar bi-products as it repells fleas and ticks just like it does termites in our homes. In addition, the production building is heated in the winter from excess steam from our kilns piped underground. Our goal is to keep our manufacturing and your costs to a minimum.
