FAQ

  1. DO YOUR HOMES MEET THE NEW ENERGY CODES NOW IN PLACE?

Since 1983, our building systems have the thermal barrier capacities that significantly exceed code requirements regardless of regional locations. Our plans will detail the needs specific to your climate area.

  2. WHY DO YOU USE NORTHERN WHITE CEDAR?

Northern White Cedar is our wood species of choice for some very good reasons. White cedar has a unique cellular structure, which makes it very resistant to insects, rot, decay and shrinkage. Its light… consistent coloring holds finishes well. And much like cork, it will not absorb moisture. Cedar is a soft wood, and when combined with our end matching, is easy to work with. These characteristics make white cedar the most durable wood log siding available in the market place.

  3. DO LOG AND TIMBER HOMES REQUIRE A LOT OF MAINTENANCE?

A white cedar log house or timber-crafted home is much less difficult to preserve than wood sided homes that use pine or red cedar products. White cedar does not have knots that will bleed or decay like pine products. The only protection you will need is a stain to keep our product from turning a grey color from ultraviolet light.

There are many QUALITY stain products that can be used, though they will need to be renewed periodically depending on the amount of sunlight reaching the walls. A quick check is to spray water on the surface and look for discoloring. If the water beads, the finish is still providing protection.

  4. DO YOU SUPPLY LOG OR TIMBER HOME MATERIALS OUTSIDE OF MICHIGAN?

Absolutely, we have and continue to ship material throughout the United States, Canada and Japan. Don't let the distance from your jobsite to our mill influence your decision. Remember quality white cedar can only be found in the upper Midwest.

Any freight charges you incur will be a very minor cost when compared to your home or commercial project. In addition, we might be able to combine your order with another customer's delivery to reduce freight costs.

  5. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?

We began in 1947 as Boyne Falls Log Homes and became Town & Country Cedar Homes in 1983. We are the second oldest consecutively producing log home company in the United States.

  6. WHERE CAN I SEE SOME OF YOUR PRODUCTS?

If you are interested in seeing our products contact us and we will try to find a location close to where you are building. If possible, the very best way to see our products is a tour of our mill and production buildings. You would find the tour most interesting and informative.

  7. AREN'T ALL LOG & TIMBER HOME BUILDING SYSTEM PROVIDERS THE SAME?

Most definitely not! We offer the finest Northern White Cedar available; hand-scribed and engineered roof systems, trims and paneling products. With our vast inventory on hand we can quickly supply any products you will need for your log or timber project. Plus, don't forget the 60+ years of experience.

  8. IS YOUR WOOD KILN DRIED?

We will not ship our log home materials until the wood has been kiln dried to its appropriate moisture content level. White cedar is a very stable wood, but it needs to be kiln-dried so the customer does not experience any dimensional changes in their finished material. Air drying or inadequate kiln-drying is not sufficient.
